Artist's description:

From 1995 to 1996 I explored the theme of "self-destruction" in my paintings. In hindsight it is a religious painting. I have since realized that the self-destruction theme goes hand-in-hand with the Christian ideal of overcoming the flesh and becoming a spiritual being.

When I started this painting I found painting in oils extremely hard. Then Jan Schutte, a very accomplished artist and my teacher at the time, suggested I try "drawing" in paint by punching holes in my paint tubes and squeezing lines of paint directly onto the canvas. It was a revelation and the point in my career where painting "clicked". I completed several paintings in this style. The others have been sold, but I've held on to this one because it was Genesis. Two decades on I am now OK with sending this painting off to a new home.

This painting comes ready to hang, with a sturdy, high-quality wooden frame.

Materials used:

Oil on stretched canvas, sturdy wooden frame.
