I made this quick sketch of one of my favourite models Darja during a life drawing session run by some friends. This pose was for a very limited time - that always concentrates the mind! I began the drawing by blocking in the general masses of the pose in a sepia water colour. I prefer this approach as it makes for a much more fluid and dynamic rendering. Whereas, if one starts by drawing, the temptation is always to add too much detail before adding the body colour resulting in a somewhat static "coloured-in" finish. The occasional mis-placed brush stroke, in the urgency of the moment, is offset, in my opinion, by the energy of the mark making.
