The grandeur of the Venetians is ever present in European architecture, and Chania harbour is no exception. Known as the 'Venice of the East', this town in West Crete is a Venetian gem. This particular building is on display right in the middle of the old harbour - but in summer months, it's fabulous intricate staircase is hidden from view by tourist shop canopies. So the view is missed by the thousands of passers by - they see T-shirts, beach towels and keyrings - but in winter, once the tourists have gone, the canopies are packed away, and the real honest beauty of Chania harbour is displayed in all it's glory.
