This study is for a painting originally titled "Lovers" simply because I saw the two main characters -- the red and coral roses -- interacting intimately. The coral rose, bashful and coy and the red rose somewhat full of itself displayed as the center of interest in the composition. Then, as I considered another angle, I saw the coral rose turning away from a display of immutable, stubborn pride. Hurtful words have just been spoken and the coral rose feels defeated -- even rejected. Not that reconciliation is unachievable but for the moment separation is inevitable.
