This piece was painted alla prima from life.

These are some of my most faithful painting companions of the last 20 years! From my screw top palette medium holder, to my custom handcrafted palette where even the thumbhole was perfectly custom molded to my thumb. My favourite palette knife was custom shaped too to create the most delicate of touches..

I've been having fun doing different compositions on small about 4" x 4" panels.
To keep the pieces fresh and spontaneous I set my timer (with all the prep work done, prepared supports, paints laid out etc.) and go at it. A new fresh composition is quickly formulated and then this preliminary structure is quickly painted in with raw umber before laying in the darker shadows, lights.. making sure to create harmony by working, back and forth, on the whole piece at the same time. Careful attention is given to laying in the correct hues and tones straight away to keep the strokes fresh and not overworked.
