Original artwork description:

This is one of a series of pictures inspired in execution by the work of Kleitias, the ancient Athenian vase painter in the black-figure style. A picture of a detail from his François Vase depicting Ares kneeling hung in the lounge of my childhood home. The Greek hero Odysseus always puts me in mind of my late brother Richard who was likewise a great traveller in search of his own Ithakas and this image reminds me strongly of him. This is one of many paintings of mine in which Richard makes an appearance.
