Artist's description:

100% hand built stretcher and canvas stretched and primed myself. Created from inspiration of my travels around Thailand in summer 2012; this work is from a series of 3. The series explores the use of decorative gold that covers much of Thailand's architecture for what is commonly known as a poverty stricken country. It is this use gold which symbolises wealth and power that seemed somewhat contradictory of the people living in poverty across most of the country. This is something I wished to represent in images of poverty that I regularly see based in the UK. This image of poverty being council estates and high rise tower blocks which I would decorate with gold leaf to represent the somewhat excessive use I saw across Thailand.

Materials used:

Acrylic and Gold Leaf on Canvas
