Artist's description:

This painting is part of my Arthurian Legends series, and is based on the legendary sword Excalibur.

How King Arthur actually ends up wielding the sword Excalibur is open to debate. The two most common retellings involve either a young Arthur pulling the sword from a stone, or the sword being gifted to him by the Lady of the Lake. This painting has some elements of both versions, although I favour the version with the Lady of the Lake because it seems somewhat more magical to me.

I really wanted this painting to feel magical, but be grounded in a real world setting at the same time. I used some photo reference from my collection for the environment, to help it to feel more real.

I really enjoy painting natural environments. There's something magical about nature, and that works well with the theme here I think.
