Artist's description:

"Butterfly #5" is a bit of an anomaly. Though the wings are just 50% "live-edge", they show burn marks & singes that have become endemic of Big Sur, California driftwood due to the many wildfires that have plagued the area over the course of the last few years. These burn marks not only give the work a deeper dimension, they also compliment the dramatic grain & coloration of the wood itself, making the piece a bit of a surprise when viewed at close-quarters rather than from a distance.

As with all of the pieces in the Live-Edge Butterfly series, the delicately crafted driftwood wings are attached to a 12" square sheet of 3/8" acrylic, which is frosted on one side only and treated with a proprietary blend of soy wax & natural pine tree turpentine (which is odorless after mixing with the soy wax) to help protect the wood and to give it a subtle sheen. Moreover, each piece can be hung via a French cleat--a.k.a., z-bar--to a wall, as well as simply placed on a flat surface as any free-standing sculpture would.

Materials used:

Big Sur, California driftwood, acrylic sheet, display hardware
