Artist's description:

This piece is an abstract encaustic painting (bees wax, damar, pigment) with purple aluminum metal leaf on nine individual wood panels which are assembled to make a 24” square painting.

The painting varies from textured brush strokes to smooth and shiny painted and gilded surfaces. The raw wood is exposed in the areas where there is no paint.

This piece is part of a series of paintings that I made after a recent trip to Iceland, where I was inspired by the volcanic landscape. I was thinking about how the nature of materials can change in different temperatures and of the word “molten” as it applies to lava, wax and metals. I was also thinking about the movement of energy under the earth’s crust and into the open air.

Encaustic paint is made from a combination of beeswax, pigment, and damar, and is worked by heating and melting the materials. Encaustic paintings are very durable (examples remain from ancient Egypt) but they are susceptible to high temperatures, so they should not be hung in direct sunlight, or near a radiator, for example.

This piece comes ready to hang in a simple white edge frame.
