Artist's description:

These fine little "workhorses" are based in the busy port of Terneuzen in southern Holland. I spotted them tied up here as if waiting for work on a beautiful sunny morning in early summer. I loved the bright red colour agaist the pale blue of the sky and the water with white daisies in the grass in the foreground to add to the freshness of the scene. I set up my easel and started to paint the scene immediately, without any pre-drawing, in order to get the shapes of the boats onto paper before they moved away - as has happened to me before. Landscapes and the objects in them are often not stationary and these sturdy tug boats are here to work, after all, and not just to play the artist's model!

"Tugboats" was painted en plein air in Terneuzen harbour in the Netherlands using Hahnmühle 600g mould-made paper and Windor and Newton watercolour paints. It comes mounted to fit a frame of 50x60cm and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

Materials used:

650g mould-made cotton rag watercolour paper, Windsor and Newton watercolour paints

"Tug Boats", Terneuzen
