This painting depicts the rescue of the crew of the Portsmouth smack 'Lady of the Lake' in 1878. It's the latest in a series of shipwrecks off Sidmouth in Devon, the subject matter fascinates me and I like to do this style of historically researched narrative painting from time to time. I began the series in the late 1980s and at this time my marine works were beginning to receive international recognition. This one is of particular interest because my previous studio was situated on the cliff top just a few hundred yards from where this boat was wrecked. Even with a covering of snow these iconic red Devon cliffs are easily identifiable.
