Artist's description:

This artwork is a photograph I took in the beautiful city of Kotor, in Montenegro, when I was visiting it on holiday. The picture is part of my "Photo Abstracts" series. I try to capture details of everyday life in a way that reflects the style of the Abstract Expressionist paintings of artists I love. Mark Rothko in particular,is a huge inspiration to me.
This picture is of a wooden window shutter I found on a quiet backstreet of the city. It had been painted on many times, over a period of many years, and then someone had scratched into the surface, perhaps as a way to remove flyers, but in doing so, had unconsciously creating this beautiful arrangement of colour and texture.
I always compose my images very carefully, cropping what I see in a way to create a striking composition. After that, I edit the photographs using photoshop, but in such a way as to only enhance what was really there, not to alter reality, as I think that it is important that these photographs reflect the hidden beauty that can be found all around us.
