Original artwork description:

This is an outdoor painting created on the edge of the river Mosel in Germany at the time of year when the little villages become the peaceful places they once were before the vineyards made them such a magnet for tourists. This popular tourist area is very quiet in the late autumn with just the sound of the leaves blowing along the empty streets but it is nonetheless very welcoming and romantic for the winter visitors who do venture here. It is this atmosphere of a typical Mosel village at this time of year that I have attempted to capture in "Mosel Village in November". The village in this case is Schleich near Schweich and not too far from the oldest town in Germany - Trier. Only the very keenest of outdoor artists is still working en plein air in November and it was pretty chilly at the water's edge I can tell you! :-)

I have used dark grey-blues to hint at the furthest horizon which is the nearby forested Hunsrück area, above the Mosel valley. Then there are some empty vines on the right, still with a touch of yellow as the last leaves prepare to fall. In the foreground the buildings are typical for the region with their natural slate rooves and the style of the church building. The old chestnut tree in the foreground was shedding its leaves fast as I painted. I have used complimentary "earthy" colours to accentuate the historical atmosphere of the village as well as its cosiness.

This painting is one of a series of paintings of the Mosel region. It comes mounted and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

Materials used:

650g, 100% cotton rag, mould-made paper
