Artist's description:

Mers les Bains is an impressive French seaside town on the Normandy coast. As the south coast of England, they have beautiful white chalk cliffs. Having already painted “The White Cliffs of Dover” (also available on Artfinder) on the other side of La Manche, it was fun to paint their French counterparts. This plein air work was created during a 5-day watercolour painting workshop in the Somme area of Normandy which I participated in with other members of the Belgian watercolour institute.

The white cliffs, which are really a lot of different colours and, in some places, green with growth, form the backdrop for the row of colourful houses from the Bel Époque. The spirit of that time is very much alive in Mers les Bains. As I painted this scene on an esplanade, there were loudspeaker announcements of a cirque avec des animaux exotiques (circus with exotic animals) which would take place on the area close to the pier that afternoon. I'm not sure I approve of that, but I did feel set back in time to the era when holiday makers came here by chemin de fer de vapeur (steam train) in hats, suits and long dresses to “partake” of the sea air.
It was also the time when my artistic heroes, the French impressionists, were in this region of France too and the spirit of Eugène Boudin – whose work has always also inspired me – is present here. How lovely it was to be pursuing my own passion of watercolour painting while moving in the places that inspired my artistic heroes and painting works which I can then give such wonderful titles as “Mers les Bains”! :-).

This original watercolour painting comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
