Original artwork description:

There is a fine tradition of artists painting the sea – it’s big, it’s blue (mostly), it’s ever changing; what’s not to like? Monet, Turner, Corbet, Rembrandt all dipped their toe into marine art. In Japan the celebrated woodblock print artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige made striking images of the sea. In the 17th century artists of the Dutch Golden Age reflected the importance in their paintings of the Netherlands being one of the major naval powers of the time. Surprisingly enough there is also quite a thriving scene in Low-Tide artwork. Monet and Corbet often hung around until the tide went out and depicted what they saw. So this painting is not that unusual. Most non-Dutch people don’t realise that the coast of the Netherlands is just one long beach. What’s left when the tide goes out can be just as visual as the sea itself. This beach is near Scheveningen.
