Original artwork description:

This painting was inspired by a forest walk near my home when the ground was crisp with frost and there was a nip in the air. I am normally a plein air painter but since my watercolours would have frozen on the palette, I painted this later in my studio from several photos of frozen leaves that I took from above looking down at my feet! Normally a watercolour “purist” (i.e. any white in the painting is just the paper shining through), in this case I have broken the rules slightly by applying white watercolour paint to create the “hairs” of frost around the contours of the leaves and the spattering of frost on them. The fact that it is a close up detail of a larger whole and the blending of warm autumnal hues and cool blues gives this painting an almost abstract feel although the subject is painted to give a realistic representation of frozen leaves.

This original watercolour painting was painted on 300g, rough Arches paper using Windsor and Newton watercolour paints and it comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

Materials used:

300g, rough Arches paper, Windsor and Newton watercolour paints
