Artist's description:

This is an outdoor painting created in the Eifel region of Germany about an hour from my home. I love the open ruggedness of the landscape here and so this is one of a series of Eifel paintings depicting its various characteristics. This painting depicts an approaching thunderstorm. As I painted in this lovely meadow of wildflowers near the lone farm buildings, I could hear the distant rumbling of thunder that gives this painting its title. It is these frequent thunderstorms forming over the high ground and bringing summerrain that lets the Eifel retain its freshness throughout the season.
I always paint in watercolour as this lends itself to my type of spontaneous on-site painting. Here, I have used the flow of the watercolour to create the natural cloud effects and mistiness of the distant forest while the yellow in the foreground acts as a contrast to the deep blue of the foreboding sky.
