    My 'Happy Place'

    My 'Happy Place'

Laughingbird Caye is a particularly 'powerful place ' for me. It is my 'Happy Place' where I escape to in my mind on cold and rainy British winter days. It is 17 miles off the Belize coast from Placencia ( patience in Spanish) so you need a powerful boat to get there. The snorkeling is fantastic with some beautiful tropical sealife to experience but you have to watch out for the fire coral. I particularly remember the barracuda and the curious huge groupers that would come up and ' kiss' you on the face mask. I took the public bus down to Placencia which took for ever then and the roads were terrible but I could not face the bus back. There was a local airport with small plane flights back to Belize city. It is the only time I have boked a flight without asking the cost ! I imagine that the road has been improved now sadly.

    Powerful places

    Powerful places

I am having a great time at the moment exploring in my mind ( and photo archive ) and transferring into paintings memories from my fairly extensive travels as a younger man... BC.. before children! I have been fortunate to have travelled extensively and have an almost endless stock of vivid memories of some powerful places to draw on.

    Green Haze

    Green Haze

I was very pleased to have sold my Painting 'Green Haze' to a buyer in London. This was the last of a series of five paintings that I had painted in turn as a gift for my Sister for her newly decorated Kitchen..... However she rejected them all in turn.... but I am pleased that all have now sold! I am still searching for that abstract perfection that she is seeking. However I must say that it has spurred me on and I think a more satisfying style is finally emerging!

    Tangs

    Tangs

I was very pleased to have sent my large 102cm x102cm painting 'Tangs' off to a buyer in California. It took some wrapping up! It was too large to use my usual courier so I was nervous about delivery time, however I was impressed with how quickly it arrived at its destination within 9 days with Transglobal Express.

    Break at Waberswick in Suffolk

    Break at Waberswick in Suffolk

I have just returned from a really relaxing holiday at Warberswick on the Suffolk coast where I managed to complete four small watercolour paintings. Watercolours are not my usual preferred medium so this was fun for me. Our family rented a house a couple of doors away from where Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a great creative hero of mine lived during the last years of his life around 100 years ago when he concentrated his efforts on his paintings. I was impressed that Warberswick did not play on the Mackintosh connection in any way. However he must of walked the same footpath as we did from the road to the beach and this was a pleasure for me. Mackintosh was arrested in Warberswick as he was carrying a lamp at night so that he could paint at dusk. The local police thought that he might be a German spy signalling to U boats. To them his Scottish accent was too foreign!!

    Summer Stream

I am pleased to have sold one of my limited edition prints 'Summer Stream ' recently to a buyer in Stockbridge. This painting was inspired by the iconic chalk stream at Mottisfont Abbey near Romsey. Sadly for me, Art finder no longer lists limited edition prints but my full range of 34 prints are available to purchase at www.the artbarn.com/collections/paul-best

    West Dean

    West Dean

Following some recent experiments with colour and abstraction, I am hoping that a looser more energetic painting style may be emerging in my landscape inspired paintings. My main driving force remains to capture the spirit of place.....the genius loci. What do you think ?
