    Landscape Psychogeography

Had a great couple of inspirational days sharpening my painting axe recently on a workshop led by the very talented Geoff Hands at the fabulous West Dean College near Chichester in West Sussex. We adopted some interesting psychogeography techniques to explore the landscape of the grounds and translate our impressions and sketches into a series of paintings.

    Summer Wheatfield

    Summer Wheatfield

I was very pleased to dispatch my painting 'Summer Wheatfield III' off to Texas this week. This is one of a series of cheerful and bright acrylic paintings that I have created on paper that can be posted rolled in a tube at a relatively modest postage cost.

Painting workshop at Tichborne House Garden, Hampshire

Painting workshop at Tichborne House Garden, Hampshire

I really enjoyed leading a painting workshop at the fabulous Tichborne House Garden this week, focusing on some iconic Hampshire landscape. I am always very pleased to run ( reasonably local ) workshops 'En Plein Air' on indoors, ideally for around six people and can provide, easels and all materials required. Please message me ( search on line). The aim of the day is for each participant to complete a painting within a six hour workshop period ( including a lunch break) that they are happy to hang on a wall at home. There are some wildly different responses and the majority of participants are very pleased with the paintings that they have created.

    Hillier Gardens Summer Borders

    Hillier Gardens Summer Borders

I have enjoyed creating a series of small paintings this week, a series of three inspired by a visit to the spectacular centenary borders at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, near Romsey in Hampshire.

    Mottisfont Rose Garden

    Mottisfont Rose Garden

I have enjoyed creating a series of small paintings inspired by the Rose Garden at Mottisfont Abbey Gardens, near Romsey this past week. It is the end of the rose flowering season now but with the rose petals also on the ground it makes for interesting compositions. I have used acrylic paints but also coloured inks in these paintings which adds a pleasing and not entirely predictable effect.

    Needles II

    Needles II

Pleased to be dispatching my painting of the iconic Needles off to a new home in Hampshire. Have been spending a lot of time over on the isle of Wight over the past couple of years in particular but my love of the Island extends back over the past 40 years or more. My family is very fortunate to live nearby this very special place. I am hoping that they never build a tunnel or bridge to England!

    Hill Head I. Insitu

    Hill Head I. Insitu

It is always a real pleasure when a purchaser of one of my paintings sends me some feedback and a photo of the paintiing insitu. 'Hill Head I' now has a great spot in a Lovely Surrey Home. "We are thrilled with the painting and enclose a photograph of it 'in situ'.... we particularly love the perspective across the sea in your painting and chose the spot in our Hall so that walking from the kitchen to the sitting room, we would see into the perspective across to the horizon over the sea...We see lots of 'green' in the forest but less 'blue'! So we love to visit the sea for sea views."

Sometimes the palette makes a great abstract painting that would be be real struggle to create purposefully! ....Embrace the happy accidents.

    Winchester College Fields

    Winchester College Fields

I have really enjoyed painting outside again on the banks of the Itchen Navigation in the Winchester College fields in Winchester, Hampshire. There is something very special about painting 'En plein Air'. Over the course of the day the painting becomes a synthesis of the landscape over this period of time concentrating and capturing the best of it. I always choose to paint next to footpaths and enjoy interacting with the walkers.

    Northern Skies I

    Northern Skies I

Have been working on some larger scale paintings in recent weeks. Square format seems to work well to me. With Northern Skies I I have looked to the northern lights for inspiration, bringing in some silver, green and blue reflective highlights. Is this painting landscape or is it abstract? .... Everything is landscape.

    Bluebell Wood IV

    Bluebell Wood IV

I have enjoyed creating this large scale 1.2 x1m painting this past week. Bluebell woods are a favourite theme for me and the Bluebells have been particularly spectacular this year in Hampshire.
