Artist's description:

A shaded place where a stream widens and slows, a good place presumably to water animals and settle a farm. The artist John Constable (1776-1837) struggled with the scene many times. Describing one such effort in progress he commented, 'it is bleak and looks as if there would be a shower of sleet, and that you know is too much the case with my things.' Stripped of colouring, other rhythms may be found. And that is why I enjoy working in black and white.
