Artist's description:

trouble and strife
This is my second picture based upon a 'pew group' – items of salt-glazed stoneware made in Staffordshire in the 1740's. It is supposed that pew groups, typically comprising two or three characters, were often based upon real people. The term 'pew group' is misleading though because the figures do not necessarily sit in church pews, but rather on high-backed settles, which were common in inns and rural houses of the time.
In this picture a well-to-do couple appear aghast, even madam's lap dog takes up the lament. The viewer's own experience may furnish them with some insight into the scene. For my part I suspect that the couple really are sat in a church pew, hearing an interminable sermon. In the eighteenth century, the parson's catechism and sermon would typically extend to three quarters of an hour, and could well go on for longer. The exasperated faces of the pair seem to vehemently express the Proverb -- 'A fool's lips bring strife, and a fool's mouth invites a flogging.'
This print is pulled from a relief plate cut from a sheet of rubber, a variation of letterpress. After removal of areas that are not be printed, the cut rubber sheet is rolled up with ink and pressed to paper, producing the print. The completed edition made 10 copies. The paper and ink are of high quality and should present no keeping difficulty. This print is a bit bigger than I usually work, the image measures 7 x 8½ inches on a sheet 11 x 12 inches. Placement on the sheet can be seen in the secondary image. Prints can be trimmed if required before dispatch and does not incur extra charge.
