Artist's description:

the shadow of war

This print is based upon photographs of the German artist August Macke (1887—1914) and his beloved wife Elisabeth. I have portrayed them in the dark hours before Macke left for war. They were married in 1909 and had two children. Macke was called up for military service on 8th August 1914. In the following month on 26th September he was killed in action near the village of Perthes-les-Hurles, Champagne. Thus ended the life at twenty-seven of a devoted husband, father, and one of Germany's most promising artists. The lively and beautiful world Macke had portrayed died in the Great War. The world that has followed is one of suspicion, resentment and fear. And I wonder if Macke's vision might ever be recovered, or are we forever fated to live in the shadow of war.
