Artist's description:

A panoramic seascape looking south to the amazing 60 metre high sea stack, Old Man of Stoer. This remote and beautiful coastline in Sutherland has some of Scotland's highest peaks facing out towards The Minch. This wonderful sea stack which actually looks like a highlander dressed in a kilt marching through the waves. It is Torridonian sandstone and is close to the villages of Culkein and Stoer and nearby Stoer Head lighthouse.

As we passed by on a boat, I was absolutely fascinated by this natural sculpture, even from a distance the shape of the stack commands attention. This painting was made from an anchorage further north, close to Handa Island which also features several sea stacks and is a stunning bird sactuary.

The work was drawn in thin charcoal and colour built up using thin layers of acrylic in a method more in tune with watercolour.

Materials used:

Charcoal and acrylic paint on heavy acrylic paper
