In a style reminiscent of the muted colours and isolated shapes of the 1950s informalists, The work presents her updated and deconstructed vision of an abstract nocturnal scene. Hope seems to hover over this apparently simple piece. The moon, though isolated, manages to shine in the darkness, the delicate golden wings of a dragonfly are frozen mid-motion yet the fine line that dissects it symmetrically also fills it with purpose and direction. The faint traces of its earlier wandering movement now seem redundant, a thing of the past. Like idle scratches on the painted surface. Other lines in the painting, this time horizontal ones, grant the painting depth, bestowing it with the factor of distance, which the prevailing two-dimensional aspect would seem to contradict. Thus the painting captures both space and time, distance and motionlessness, separation and unity in its hopeful allegorical rereading of the classical vanitas.
