Artist's description:

This print is after the poem by Thomas Hardy by the same title. A choir with instruments sing by a moonlit graveside in Stinsford churchyard. The vicar had ruled out the choirmaster's final wish, that his favourite Psalm be sung over his grave. Even so, the choir performed as their master had wanted the evening after the official funeral.

Those in power often seek to extend restriction and many acts not in the least criminal are nevertheless carried out contrary to authority. The rejection of self-appointed directives is a continual theme in the teachings of the Lord Jesus and so it would seem apt that the portrayal of a well meant act of defiance be set in a churchyard. The choirmaster in the poem was Hardy's grandfather. The account was given him by Hardy's father, a tenor in the choir.

Technical note
This print is pulled from a relief plate cut from rubber, a variation of letterpress, akin to linoprinting. The completed edition made 7 copies. The print is a landscape image on a portrait sheet measuring 11x13 inches (279x330mm). The image measures 6x7½ inches and has a 1¾ inch (44mm) margin around the top and sides and a 5 inch margin at the bottom. I can trim the print to your order if required. All materials are of high quality and should present no keeping difficulty.
