Painted from life, the strong back profile of this seated male, showing vulnerability as well as masculine strength, called for oil bars on pastel paper with gestural marks and fluid lines used to convey this feeling of fragility and humanness. The yellow ochre lends strength and in turn appears golden where aspects of light are emphasised. The foot, tucked under and showing in the foreground from under the thigh is an important part of the painting for me, and is softly and loosely painted.
