This one comes of listening to too much Radio 4. It is an old fashioned "narrative painting", a reference to Domestic Abuse, and therefore not a pretty picture, but a subject which I think is too seldom confronted in this medium. It is starkly simple, just three figures against a uniform grey backround; the worriedly enquiring face of a fair haired little girl looking towards her battered mother (or perhaps her future Self?) who stares away from her and from the viewer, bruised, bloodshot and oblivious into her own thoughts. Behind them is the retreating figure of a man, whose anonymity and invulnerability in a dark jacket is in contrast to the exposed faces and sleeveless lilac dress of the woman and child.
