Artist's description:

Each print in this series is a unique combination of color and metallic paper. This piece is printed on reflective copper paper with a gradient of white/magenta/pink used in the tessellated star topography. The water field is a light black with some of the copper paper shining through.

As I spend half of my time working on art in the digital realm, I embrace that which reveals the handmade process in my work. The colors are mixed with each print, which allows for streaky surpises and bonus ghost patterns (or palimpsets) sometimes appear. I have taken many photographs to try to capture these traces as well as the dynamic changes inherent in a reflective piece.

Mapmaking both informs and distorts reality. "Star-Spangled Continent," is printed as if we are looking out from the center of the Earth. This vision of North America turns the familiar inside-out and helps us see new relationships in the topography, here represented by the changing scales of a tessellated star pattern. Mountain ranges, great plains and coastal lowlands are re-unified, stripped free of the arbitrary boundaries of nation states. The world surrounding the viewer is reflected within via the nature of the reflective paper.
