Artwork description:

In Greek mythology Persephone, daughter of the Goddess Ceres, is abducted whilst picking flowers on Mount Olympus by Hades the king of the underworld. Her mother turns the earth to darkness in her grief. Hades says she can’t return because she has eaten the sacred pomegranate in his kingdom. Zeus, King of the Gods, orders Persephone’s return. A compromise is reached and Hades returns her for six months each year thereby giving the Spring and Autumn. Persephone becomes queen of the underworld and returns each spring giving the seasons. What a wonderful story!

Every ceramic panel tells a fascinating story. They are inspired by Classical Greek Myths and Legends and the many traditions in Ancient Greece. I love ancient Greek vases, especially the wonderful collection in the British Museum in London. They depict fabulous stories of Gods and heroes and the incredible adventures they undertake, including Gods - Demi-gods – Muses - Nymphs - Musicians - Warriors - Acrobats - Sports and scenes from family life. The stories from Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad are a particular favourite for inspiration.

Technique: White stoneware clay, slab built and fired twice between 1100 and 1200c in an electric kiln. Decorated with oxides, engobes and glazes. Drawings are made from many sources, such as the ancient Greek Vases in the British Museum. These drawings are given a modern and personal interpretation and then transferred onto lino. Natural and manufactured objects are also used to make further impressions to produce strong textures that complement the design and give the feeling that the panel could once have been part of an ancient Greek building. It is finally put into a quality black 34x44cm frame to show it to good advantage. (A white frame is available if preferred)

Each panel is hand built and unique. Ready to hang.
Signed on the front with my unique signature stamp.
Also signed on the back. Certificate of authenticity included.
