A still life with a maritime theme. The painting was made on a boat while anchored in a remote place in the west coast of Scotland. All of the items in the painting are things we had on board from the title piece, the monkey's fist to my favourite red mug. The monkey's fist is a knot used to add weight to the end of a length of rope when throwing it a far distance. Also featured is a section of a chart from the south of Ireland, a stone and jaggy shell and a bunch of wildflowers picked along the way.
There is strong light of the objects with fairly neutral colours in the background. The work is painted with golden open acrylic in thin layers. This allows for fine detail and gradual building of tone. The paper is a heavy weight watercolour paper.
