About the artwork:
The Painting is based upon a mask, A mask which was used during the Masquerade balls in Venice but originated France around the 16/17th Century.

The Mask it's self pure black, it was held in place with a small button on the back which was placed in the mouth.

As the button would make the person silent as not to speak she would be muted, this mask would of been for servants mainly. As the painting is a female in the forest, without clothing, it's a metaphor for her wanting to break free from the servant lifestyle and of the materialistic world that is represented. We all feel like this sometimes.
