A gestural and textured oil painting in a slim black tray frame.
The paint has been applied with a palette knife, giving it a textured surface and adding to the expression of the piece.
Sal uses the tradition of portraiture but the paintings have been adapted from fiction. On the surface the image is taken from a photographic source but the image is allowed to develop through the process of applying the paint; gestural brush marks and the heightened use of colour add an emotional and expressive dynamic to her work.
The depiction of anonymous subjects whose gaze and gestures are suggestive of unknown encounters allow the viewer to consider them as reflections of themselves. These are not people we know but feelings we recognise.
