This painting showcases my fascination with the formal garden - the beauty and solemnity of statues, the dreamlike quality of the lines of hedging and the perfect rolled lawns. My love of the incongrous is shown by the lone sheep standing in the little pavilion - I love the fact that it shouldn't be in such a grand environment, especially one where a queen of England once walked. The painting was done in oil paint using some very tiny brushes to pick out the details of the hedging and the veiny patterns in the weathered stone of the statue.
The painting is taken from the gardens of Hever Castle, where Anne Boleyn grew up.
