Artist's description:

An image that has stayed in my mind. Seen long ago; painted very recently. There was snow lying on the ground and a slightly misty, ghostly background but the tree trunk was a vivid, glowing green. I suppose this was lichen rather than moss but it had a velevety sheen like a stag's antlers. The tree was on a path running along the river with old field paths (marked by trees) running downhill towards the water.

When I look at this piece I know exactly where the spot is and what I was feeling at the time. For me it's a piece about atmosphere. I made a piece of paper specially for it and used acrylics, pigments and, finally, pastels to bring the colours to life. The colour is built up in layers. You can just see that people had scrawled their initials on the bark in days gone by.
