Artwork description:
Painting is a form of meditation for me and when it’s the portrayal of the ‘ Enlightened One’ it goes beyond the levels of cultivating the presence of God on Canvas. I humbly become the medium through which emotions get portrayed by the simple brush and colors. An unseen force guides my hand as I listen to the sound of silence at night while painting the Buddha !
This painting depicts the meditative state of Gautama Buddha as he sat under the Bodhi tree seeking the truth. He remained there for several days, purifying his mind, seeing his entire life, and previous lives, in his thoughts. During this time, he had to overcome the threats of Mara, an evil demon, who challenged his right to become the Buddha. When Mara attempted to claim the enlightened state as his own, Siddhartha touched his hand to the ground and asked the Earth to bear witness to his enlightenment, which it did, banishing Mara. Soon a picture began to form in his mind of all that occurred in the universe, and Siddhartha finally saw the answer to the questions of suffering that he had been seeking for so many years. In that moment of pure enlightenment, Siddhartha Gautama became the ‘Buddha’.
(Research reference - Buddha Biography)
The use of earthen tones in the painting have a purposeful approach to signify reliability, dependability, and approachability. It is the color of our soil associated with growth, comfort and nurturing. Brown affects the mind and body by creating feelings of wholesomeness, stability, and peace. It provides feelings of history, and connection, as well as pleasant feelings of relaxation and warmth. The touch of red represents purity, joy, and celebration. In some other cultures red is used for good luck and represents happiness and prosperity.
The sides of the artwork are painted over and the painting has been varnished to protect its surface from the environmental factors such as dust and ultraviolet light .
