Whilst exploring the culture of Benin, I came across the practice of Voodoo.
I find the subject of inanimate objects having some sort of superpower fascinating, even in western religions through the veneration of certain people/things.
Somehow Voodoo has had the most negative reputation of all these practices due to their portrayal on TV across western societies.
I wanted to create a portrait of a traditional African fetish by using a mixture of techniques. I also wanted the image to have a rough aspect to it, the use of oil sticks allowed me to have that effect.
graphite, gouache, ink, oil stick
