Artist's description:

The goldfinches in my garden are truly my favourite birds and I hang lots of bird-feeders on the cherry tree for them, filled with niger seed. I love to watch them while I am working or reading. They always flutter in a little squabbling frenzy - delightful. Just as I was finishing this painting off this morning it started to snow!

A girl wearing a golden transparent dress holds golden seeds in her outstreched cupped hands ... this attracts a crowd of the fluttering finches. Her colouring mirrors the goldfinches - black, red, white ... one little goldfinch has sussed that golden seeds have dropped to the ground.

The photos show the deckled edge of the paper, the shiny gold gouache (at an angle), as well as the cherry tree in my garden.

Graphite, watercolour and gold gouache sketch on grey Khadi paper.

I wanted to show off the lovely colour of the paper so that forms the basic colour with lots of white, gold and russet highlights.
