I was lucky enough to visit the Farne Islands and on the way there the boat stopped by some rocks where we were treated to a close encounter with basking grey seals. Seeing them in the wild, getting on with their lives in a place that was constantly moving was an incredible feeling. I felt quite emotional and inspired to paint them.
From a painter's point of view, I was fascinated by the seaweed and the patterns it made, formed by the rising and falling of the tide. Until I saw it for myself, I would have just imagined it all lying higgledy-piggledy, and not having that strange sense of order created by the waves.
