In winter it is easily seen, what the Landwehr Canal in Berlin keeps secret the rest of the year. (This canal marks the border between the Kreuzberg and Neukölln districts in Berlin.)
That what usually lies underneath is now on the surface, engaged in an almost theatrical dialogue with the many other participants contributed by the locals. Christmas trees huddle together; sometimes a shopping cart joins the conversation, perhaps accompanied by a television set. The most interesting of these gatherings that I witnessed was between a collection of tires scattered on the ice. Four in all, the few remaining chess pieces, across an invisible board.
Only one remained upright. What were they doing? What were they saying? Either way, it was going to be a short-lived relationship- with the thaw, everything would change. Capture it now, they said. Capture it now.
