original, large acrylic painting inspired by NYC and one of the well known restaurants Delmonico's

One of the first modern restaurants in New York and the rest of the United States was Delmonico’s. It was founded by two Swiss Brother’s on William Street in 1827 before moving here in 1835 after the Great Fire which burned down the original shop. The current building dates to 1891. Delmonico’s pioneered things we take for granted, like being able to order à la carte off a menu rather than being served a full multi course meal. The original family owned the restaurant until the 1920s when they sold it. It operated as a speakeasy during the depression and was awarded the third liquor license in the city after the repeal of the 18th Amendment. It has operated under numerous owners since the 80s. One urban legend surrounding the restaurant is that the columns flanking the entrance were from Pompeii. It was landmarked on February 13th, 1996.
