The ‘Cycles’ series chronicles the changing of the seasons and the wax and wane of the moon. Through the lens of the traditional Celtic festivals and the astronomical calendar, these images evoke feelings of mystery and awe, and help us to understand our place in the natural world.
In Celtic mythology, the feminine has three aspects: the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. Each of these corresponds to a stage in a woman’s life, a phase of the moon and also to certain times in the year. The four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water bring further influences that were relevant to the fertility festivals of the Celts.
The Crone of Air reigns over the Spring Equinox. As part of the light element of Air, she embodies the energy of life returning to the earth. And as the Crone, she represents the end of the phase, the time when, at the Equinox, the lightness of Air makes way for the intensity of Fire- the element of hot, summer days.
