Artist's description:

This is an original handmade shadow box complete with a glass front and frame. It is finished in a dark satin stain and has been fitted with brass screws and an antique toggle switch, and powered by a 9v adapter.

This shadow box is a visually immersive model, as alluring and enchanting as it is curious. Saturated with texture, colour and detail. The box was designed to be viewed from any side and angle, every time you view it you will see something you didn't see before. There is no beginning or end to the models inside, they are made to appear as if the end is just out of sight.

Crossing over. The journey that was assigned to us at birth.

The Box depicts a lychgate nestled between sturdy brick walls and heavily guarded by two strong trees. Symbolic of the many ways our western culture does its best to protect us from death and prevents us exploring and facing our deepest fears.
From the gate we can peer into a churchyard. Through the fog we can just about make out a figure or a statue. The locked gate makes it impossible to discover just what it is we are seeing and our fears are left unresolved. The gravestones stand like sentinels watching your every move and reminding you this is not a place for the living - you are on the correct side of the gate and shouldn’t come any further.

..but the sun almost gone now casts an ethereal glow that makes this seemingly frightening place impossible to be frightening and curiosity leads us to explore and find a way to open that gate..

All of my work in this series is inspired by the art of storytelling through unconventional illustration.

The box is backlit with (replaceable) LED lights behind complex layers of scenery and atmosphere to create a lifelike and almost moving environment.

The back of the box includes a panel that can removed with a screwdriver. The LED's are powered by a 9v adapter (included).
