Each circle represents a chakra, the spinning wheels of energy found at various points of the body. Arranged into a 'chakra flower' to show how each higher disc is a step on from the last, my work uses bright chiyogami paper, copper leaf, texture paste and egg shells to give each one a different character.
The painting is on a chunky linen box canvas and the seven chakras are set on a copper-washed background. I was inspired to create this work through my love of yoga which often works in tandem with chakra development, each one corresponding to a different energy centre. Red, for example, represents the root chakra and informs matters related to survival, while green is for emotional matters and the purple chakra is connected to the crown and how we are relate to the outside world.
