The painting- one of a series of three- was intended as a miniature landscape. My intention was to monumentalize the accidental and mundane- a tangled garden border- nodding towards Albrecht Durer's classic 'Great Patch of Turf' and to create a tension between the surface effect (impasto oil) and the pictorial detail. I want the viewer to appreciate the natural, the decorative and the harmonic, whilst getting a suggestion of darkness and entropy.
