Original artwork description:

This Ink and Acrylic on Canvas piece was started in 2014 as preparation and practice for the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year 2014 competition that I was lucky to have been selected for. I wanted to practice using different types of materials and also subjects with different skin tones. I have always been a huge fan of Bob Marley and his music and so he was a perfect subject. I like to use Acrylic and Ink on Paper, but wanted to try it on Canvas with this piece. I first drew out the portrait in pencil and then when I was happy with the size, likeness and placement, I defined the outline in Ink. After that I added thin layers of Acrylic Paint to the areas that I wanted to colour, adding a dripping effect to the red, gold(yellow) and green rasta colours of his hat. After I was happy with the layers and tones of colour and they had dried, I added Ink onto the top of the image. I like to use this process because as I add the Ink by hatching and shading, the image starts to appear and become more defined, almost like it is emerging out of the picture. I like the control of using Pen and Ink as it allows me to add very minute details into my pictures and gradually build them up. This process is much more effective on paper and so I abandoned this piece unfinished as I didn't like how it was going. That was until last year when I had some paint left over from another piece and decided to work more onto this piece again. Instead of using Ink to build up the detail I used paint and the drip effect to create this unique image. At these times when divisions and differences are being used as a weapon it is more important then ever to support all positive influences and celebrate our differences rather than hold them against each other. All life is precious, black lives matter. Spread love and positivity, One Love.
