The fading light forced completion of this study in the studio, where I drew on a felt sense of the space rather than direct observation. The energetic strokes and almost violent application of the paint with the palette knife are indicative of the speed at which I worked on it, in an effort to grasp the quickly fading memory. In so doing, this work veered away from direct representation towards abstraction. The layered texture is a result of working over the painting repeatedly, as
I struggled to see the relationship between objects
and colours.
