From my series, Metamorphosis, this photograph bears witness to the unfolding of that miraculous potential that resides within each of us. Using a slow shutter speed allowed me to suffuse the image with energy and imprint a stream of moments onto a single print. In this light painting, the subject herself is an artist, painting the photographic canvas—my 35mm film negative—with her movement.
The darkroom, the birthplace of this film image, is another place where such metamorphoses occur as the generation of a color image requires the complete absence of light. Similarly, in our own lives, we must endure times of darkness and unseeing before we experience the miraculous unfolding of our whole potential.
With colors reminiscent of the Aurora Borealis, "Aurelia" was created exclusively with film. Thus it could not be seen until after its journey through the alchemical process of development and arose from a creative practice grounded in intuition.
"Aurelia" is numbered and signed by artist on back of print in acid-free metallic gel ink. It is a LightJet Print, meaning that the image was printed directly from the film itself and processed through wet chemistry. It is printed on Kodak Endura Paper - a professional grade matte paper with a luster finish and an archival life of one hundred years.
