The impressionist painting shows a tranquil winter landscape not far from the artist's home. A narrow, almost motionless river flows through the centre of the picture, running like a silent ribbon through the snow-covered landscape. Tall, bare trees line the banks to the left and right - their delicate branches reach up into the grey-blue winter sky and are gently reflected in the mirror-smooth water. The scene is bathed in a soft, diffuse light. The low winter sun breaks through the pale haze and bathes the snow cover in a soft, luminous white. Long shadows cast by the trees cover the snow and give the landscape depth and structure. On the near horizon, which is lightly dipped in mist, you can make out a shady copse - a silent boundary between the course of the river and the wider landscape. The colour palette is restrained: cool blue tones, off-white and soft earth tones dominate the picture and create a melancholy, peaceful atmosphere.
