"Sandi J. Ludescher, Portrait of a dancer, from nude dancer series" by Sandi J. Ludescher

“This painting is the only one in my Nude Dancer series that is not anonymous. I was captivated by the dancer’s seemingly ageless beauty. The only indication that this may be a contemporary piece is by the manner in which I have handled the paint. The model, though, evokes the same sort of debates that have followed the Mona Lisa all through the ages - what is she thinking? What does she look at? Is she, perhaps, pregnant and considering the life within her? In spite of the unanswered questions - and maybe partly because of them - she does have a natural beauty that transcends time and will still be appreciated generations from now.” - Sandi J. Ludescher

"Marie Kazalia, Repressed Memory Wallpaper" by Marie Kazalia

“Repressed Memory Wallpaper has to do with my memories of visually taking-in color and pattern in infancy and childhood, in a fascination without understanding, and how all that re-mixes and re-emerges in unexpected combinations of color and form as I paint. As I worked on this piece, each line of spots came intuitively, in that I could visualize what colors and patterning and size of spots to paint. Yet I worked without really knowing what the finally outcome would look like.” - Marie Kazalia

"Emma Cownie, Perpetual Light, 2013" by Emma Cownie

“The subject material here is one of my very favourite chapels in Wales. Not only is it the smallest but I also love its crooked bell tower. Mostly, I love how it is bathed in traditional Welsh white, unusual in that most chapels are not these days. This white helps catch the brilliance of the sunshine, which puts it in start contrast to the “gloom” of the gravestones. People have variously commented on how this painting “captures sunshine”, “reminds me of hope”, or rises above the death association. I think it has done so because there is an intrinsic hope in sunshine. It is also clear that light and dark need each other, shadow and brilliance. Despair and hope. Beyond the graves there is a light, and the title of the painting points to a Christian reference, mentioned in relation to those who have moved on, “Let perpetual light shine upon him/her…”, so there is hope in this message of eternal light beyond the grave.” - Emma Cownie.

"Gina Soden, Care Home, 2012" by Gina Soden

“This was a derelict care home that was used as a hospital in World War I. It’s situated in the German mountains and has been abandoned since the 90’s - it has a beautiful amount of decay. I snuck into it via a very tight back window. I felt like a contortionist! To take this photo I was balanced on a very thin rotting wooden floorboard, it was a task to get my tripod set up without falling through the floor! The colours were very varied in here and there was a lot of texture. It was a photo I could not pass on taking, even if it was risky.” - Gina Soden.

"Sven Laurent, Padlocked Fixie Bikes - Poster Print" by Sven Laurent

Inspired by “melancholic wanderings”, Brussels based photographer Sven Laurent explores the questions of space and materiality in contemporary landscape photography. This image is part of a series showing common objects of our urban lives. The light, materiality and perspectives of the represented objects give us a different look on the daily environment of the cities we live in. The choice of printing large scale posters on matt paper was motivated by its natural referral to public display.

"Galina Zimmatore, Imminent Storm , 2013" by Galina Zimmatore

“Last year I drove from Portugal through Spain, France, Italy and Switzerland and vividly remember a dramatic scene at a Swiss mountain lake with ominous black clouds building up just prior to a deluge of rainwater descending onto the lush landscape below. In this picture I have tried to capture that magic moment with the pungent smell of ozone in the air and the electric anticipation of the impending downpour. I have used a large format canvas, acrylic paints as well as modelling paste to create the 3D effect on the mountains, all offset by lush grass and flowers in the foreground.” - Galina Zimmatore.

"Alan Wynne, The Kiss, 2013" by Alan Wynne

“This contemporary mosaic is inspired by Prince William and Kate’s kiss on the balcony at Buckingham Palace on their wedding day. The piece was made from 4,200 hand-laid 1cm Italian glass tiles in the Opus Regulatum style of mosaic. The tactile nature of my pieces allows the viewer to interact with them. I use a medium that has been around for thousands of years to create contemporary pieces of artwork that bring the past and present together.” - Alan Wynne.

"Tom Berry, London Circles Series: London Time, 2013" by Tom Berry

“In this picture, London lives inside a giant pocket-watch. The inner workings of the mechanism are exposed and the motion of the hands across the surface of the city determine the rhythms of its 8 million inhabitants. The London Circles Series is a collection of five images of the capital, each portraying a different character of the city.” - Tom Berry.

"Stu Sporn, Twin Peppers, 2013" by Mitchell Stuart

“This photograph is tribute to the great photographer Edward Weston, who was fascinated by the form and texture of peppers. In 1930 he did a series of pepper photographs which were abstract in form and interpreted by the viewer. “A box of peppers at the corner grocery hold implications to stir me emotionally more than almost any other edible form, for they run the gamut of natural forms, in experimental surprises.” The pepper photographs have given me lots of funny stories - a few years ago this photograph got me kicked off Facebook for being lewd. I had to give them the whole Weston story before they reinstated me! Another time a photo contest judge explained to the audience that my entry was disqualified because it was a nude. Someone from the audience yelled out “it's a pepper!” Naturally, I didn't place.” - Stu Sporn.

"Leon Sarantos, Still Life with Mannequin Hand, 2010" by Leon Sarantos

“I am currently painting a series of artworks that combine abstract and representational art. “Still Life with Mannequin Hand” portrays a globe, cup and the hand of a mannequin - the objects and shapes in this still life are readily recognizable, but are portrayed in a stylized manner with outlines in strong black lines. An atmosphere of tension pervades the painting; the globe is perched unsteadily on a pile of books, while the mannequin’s hand leans somewhat precariously over the edge of the table. I was very pleased when this painting received Best In Show at the Cornerstone Art Gallery, Indiana, 2011.” - Leon Sarantos.
